Apparently alarmed by the huge death toll trailing the recent consumption of locally made gin, (Ogogoro) Imo State House of Assembly, IMHA, yesterday, passed a motion urging the Governor Rochas Okorocha to direct the State Ministry of Health to trace and prosecute anybody producing locally made gin without the approval of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC.  The motion was sponsored by the member representing Ideato North state constituency, Mr. Arthur Egwim, and seconded by the member representing Onuimo state constituency, Mr. Chinedu Offor.

The prayers of the motion also compelled the Ministry of Health to trace the locations of the distilleries and prosecute those producing the locally made gin without the approval of NAFDAC.

While calling it the motion for the “prohibition, sale and distribution of locally made gin without the legal approval of NAFDAC,” Egwim recalled that ethanol which found its way into Ogogoro was responsible for the reported death of those who consumed the product.

Speaking also, Mr. Offor said that the motion, if approved by the House, would serve as a preventive measure against any similar case in the state.

Supporting the motion also, the member representing Isu state constituency, Ngozi Obiefule, reasoned that the motion would not only bring sanity to the society but also define the way things should be done.
