Following the reported cases of lead poison that claimed the lives of 30 children in Angwan Magoro and Kawo in Rafi local government area of Niger State, the senator representing Niger East, Senator David Umaru has advocated for immediate evacuation of people from the villages.

Umaru who visited the areas that are within his senatorial district on Monday stated that blood samples of the villagers should be taken to nearby Zamfara State for test to ascertain the level of the poisonous substance in their body for adequate and appropriate medical attention.

He said, “I was made to believe that about 250 people have been evacuated but I have not seen anybody that is evacuated. This need to be done so that we can check their blood to determine the level of contamination with the lead poison; That is important”. Umaru who expressed concern over the plight of the people of the area gave undisclosed amount of money to take more of the affected children to Zamfara for treatment.

Regretting that the efforts made to save the situation was not enough, Umaru said “First of all my assessment is that there is still some grounds to cover. A lot of efforts have been done but I think it is not enough”. “I’m made to understand that some people have come from the Federal Ministry of Power. In fact one Sani Gorozo from Abuja, have been here. We have made a lot of efforts by ensuring that the victims are evacuated to Zamfara for treatment. ” I think there is the need to take blood samples of all the residents here to ascertain the amount of infection”
