Nigeria’s Minister of Health Prof. Adewole says that Nigeria loses about two billion annually to other countries through medical tourism.
He stated in Lagos recently at the Lagos Universty Teachng Hospital during the maiden edition of the hospital’s Amity Award; he was represented by the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire.
He attributed the situation to loss of confidence in the health system, healthcare facilities and expertise.
The term, Medical Tourism is used to describe going abroad for medical treatment or check up. It gained prominence in the last decade with several Nigerians going to India, U.K., the US, Germany, South Africa, Egypt, Israel and a host of others.
He added that government was combating this forex drain through investment in equipment and capacity building.
