The Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole said neglect of the rights of victims was responsible for the lingering cases of Obstetric Fistula (OF) in the country. He made this known yesterday at the International Obstetric Fistula Working Group (IOFWG) meeting and sixth International Conference of the Fistula Surgeon with the theme, “Ending fistula within a generation.”

Adewole said “When we value life no woman should develop a fistula adding that as far as we have people having fistula we have to be worried about the need to move forward as a committee of nation.” He said as part of its contributions to repairing all OF cases, the Federal Government had established three dedicated fistula hospital in Ebonyi, Katsina and Bauchi states. “We still intend to establish two more in the 2017 as part of our collective efforts to repair all current cases of ,” he said. The minister identified education and poverty as root causes of fistula adding that “When you are educated you understand what it means to have ante-natal care, you understand what it means to delay pregnancy until you are ready and you also understand what it means to seek care when things are not going well.”
