Speaking while parading the suspects at National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, (NAFDAC) head office in Lagos, NAFDAC’s Acting Director General, Mrs. Yetunde Oni has blown the lid off activities of unscrupulous individuals engaged in the forgery of the Agency’s documents, production of counterfeit alcoholic beverages, water for injection and sales of suspected counterfeit Peak Milk, noting that the Agency received three different complaints from three countries about alleged impersonation and scams by some Nigerians who pose as staff of the Agency to process registration documents for intending importers of regulated products. Oni has explained that after diligent investigation it was discovered that the three cases were hatched and executed by a group of an international gang of criminals headed by one Mr. Eze Okoronkwo, a Nigerian who resides in Aba, Abia state. Her words: “The syndicate had collected the sum of $13,640, while there were plans to collect further $57,720. We believe this is a tip of the iceberg.” “Having established the illegal activities of the arrested persons as an economic crime, the Agency with collaboration with other sister Agencies will transfer the case to Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for further investigation and prosecution.”  She has hinted that they have also successfully arrested four Nigerians who engaged in production and sales of counterfeit products. Further, Oni said: “Following intelligence received on illegal production, distribution and sales of suspected counterfeit alcoholic beverages by one Mrs. Nkiru Okoro of Ezedams Enterprises at Km16, Badagry Expressway, Ojo-Lagos, the premises was raided and a thorough search of the facility led to the discovery of several drums of Ethyl Alcohol, unidentified chemicals in several jerry-cans and packaging materials.” “Mr. Onyekachi Ikegwuonu has also been arrested for transporting counterfeit peak milk products from the East to Lagos, while Mr. Daniel Ezekwelu was arrested by the Federal Task Force over counterfeiting water for injection at Ojoto village, Nnewi, Anambra State.” “Mr. Ejike Okereke, 46, of St. James street Iyiowa in Onitsha was arrested for counterfeiting Codrux Cough Syrup. The original cough syrup is manufactured by Alben Pharmaceutical Company located in Onitsha. In the course of interrogation, he revealed that one Ifeanyi who is still at large approached him to counterfeit the product.”
