Nigeria: Oyo Nurses Accuse Hospital Management of Embezzlement
Nurses at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomosho, have accused the management of the hospital of fraud. The workers made the accusation through the vice chairman of National Association of Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Oyo state chapter, Oyewunmi Opeyemi.
The NANNM scribe said the leadership of the teaching hospital had failed to account for several millions of naira monthly. “We have called on the (state) Commisioner of Health to ensure that accounts are audited but nothing has been done”, he said. “We are even aware that the number of workers in the hospital has been inflated, the number of persons declared is really outrageous because we know the number of persons that work with us in the hospital. “They (management) have embezzled lots of funds; we do not know what is happening with our internally generated revenue and what it is used for in the hospital,” Mr. Opeyemi said. He demanded an audit of the hospital’s account. Reacting however, the Director of Administration, Ajiferuke Ademola, dismissed the allegations. “The allegation that we embezzle is very laughable and sad. The truth is that as at April 2016, we had over 1300 workers in the teaching hospital, although people have been resigning daily due to the half salary payment. It is very bad that they have made such allegations but they are all unfounded”. Nurses in the hospital went on strike last week, citing payment of half salaries as ground for their action.
