Nigeria does not have enough doctors and nurses to cater for its population of about 185 million. This is the view of the Chairman of Nigeria Medical Association, Rivers State branch, Dr. Ibifuro Green; speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Port Harcourt, he said that contrary to the World Health Organisation recommended ratio of 1 doctor to 600 patients, Nigeria has 1 doctor to 4000 patients. According to him the situation of nurses is even worse, the recommended ratio is 1 nurse to 4 patients but Nigeria has 1 nurse to 31 patients.

He went to say the situation is even getting worse as many doctors are leaving the country.
The observation of Dr. Green cuts across the entire spectrum of healthcare personnel and the situation is not likely to improve in the nearest future.
