Two thousand and seventy two children in Zamfara State died as a result of severe malnutrition in the past six years, Director, Primary Health Care in the state Ministry of Health, Alhaji Yusuf Musa, said.

Speaking when he led Save the Children officials on a visit to the wife of Zamfara State governor, Hajiya Asma’u Abdul’aziz Yari Abubakar, Musa expressed concern over what he called upsurge in malnutrition cases.

The director attributed the increase to continuous enrolment of children drawn from some neighbouring states including Katsina, Sokoto, Kaduna States and Niger Republic. Alhaji Yusuf said due to intervention of UNICEF and Save the Children, over 87,000 children that were affected by malnutrition have been fully treated.

He said the ministry is planning to scale up the programme in two local councils of the state where malnutrition cases are on the high side, adding that accessing funds budgeted has been a serious challenge in realizing their plan.

Earlier, the state Chairman for Food and Nutrition Committee, Alhaji Muhammad Kabiru Gayari, said the visit was to solicit the support of the governor’s wife for a programmes organized by his committee to commemorate this year’s World Breastfeeding Week scheduled to hold next week.

Responding, wife of the governor, Hajiya Asma’u Abdul’aziz, expressed government’s determination to partner Save the Children in cushioning in the effect of malnutrition among children of the state.
