Zamfara State Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) is to evacuate and safely dispose of 2.6 million mosquito net nylon jackets in order to prevent chemical infection on the people of the state. The agency’s Director of Pollution Control, Malam Shehu Muhammad, made this known in Gusau when a delegation from the Malaria Action Program for States (MAPS) visited him.

The delegation was at his office to seek the agency’s partnership and cooperation for the safe disposal of the 2.6 million mosquito net jackets after the free distribution of the nets to the people of the state by MAPS. Leader of the delegation, Dr. Abdul Mussa, said MAPS is targeting that, at the end of the exercise which would commence in August, this year, every two persons would share one net.

He stated that 1.5 million of such nets were distributed in the state under the massive distribution of treated mosquito nets by MAPS in 2010/2011 but lamented that many people did not put the commodity to the expected usage which only accounted for the reduction of malaria cases by about 30 per cent in the state during the period.
