NNPC/Chevron to de-worm 60,000 pupils nationwide with WHO-recommended drugs

In line with the federal government’s determination in sustaining good health across the country and as part of its corporate social responsibilities, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in collaboration with Chevron Nigerian limited has launched the mass de-worming of pupils between the ages of six to ten.

The exercise is an effort to ensure that children in primary schools across the nation are de-wormed of infectious parasites, thereby preventing them from contracting other dangerous and life-threatening diseases.

The programme targets to de-worm at least 60 000 pupils from various primary schools in Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State, using the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended Albendazole (Zentel), which is acclaimed to be one the most potent drugs in the treatment of parasitic worms especially in kids.

Previous studies have shown that children that are not regularly de-wormed are prone to loss of iron and protein, and this can lead to stunted growth.

First lady Lagos state Mrs. Bolanle Ambode at the event commended the efforts of the firms emphasizing on the importance of giving back to the society “in which you benefit from.” Ambode who was represented by Mrs. Akinbili Uzamat reinstated the Lagos state government’s commitment to improving the health and living conditions of its residents.

General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs, Chevron Nigeria Limited, Deji Haastrup, who was represented by Manager Public Governance, Performance and Accountability (PGPA) Lagos has said that it is a great pleasure to welcome you to the NNPC/Chevron mass de-worming exercise for primary school pupils between the ages six to 12 in Lagos State. The sponsorship of the de-worming exercise reflects our long term commitment to investing in health, education and economic development initiatives that help build strong communities.

Mr. Sam Otuonye, added: “It supports Chevron’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, which are grounded in our commitment to ‘be the global energy company most admired for its people, partnership and performance.’ This is the reason we take our responsibility very seriously to support the people in our immediate communities and try to serve as an agent of positive change among them. Everywhere Chevron operates across the globe, we always strive to be a welcome member of the community, forging partnerships that support economic and social development of the people. These various supports are in alignment with Chevron’s commitment to conducting its business here in Nigeria in a socially responsible manner; adding value to the lives of the people and contributing positively to the socio-economic development of Nigeria.
