Mumbai: Ultherapy — a non-invasive procedure for lifting the skin — was launched in India on Sunday after its success in the West.

According to doctors, the technique does not give any superficial marks nor any burns and takes only a few hours after which the patient is fit to go to work immediately.

“Ultherapy is the only non-invasive procedure, which is US FDA-cleared, to lift the skin on the neck, under the chin and over the eyebrow,” Soma Sarkar, a leading cosmetic dermatologist, said during the launch here.

“It can also improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the decolletage and can help you achieve a fresher, more youthful look from your brow to your chest,” Sarkar said.

Explaining the procedure, she said that unlike lasers, which penetrate the skin from the outside-in, the Ultherapy procedure bypasses the surface of the skin, and delivers targeted energy specifically into the deep, structural tissues where collagen lives.

By stimulating the deep structural support layers of the skin, a natural, regenerative response is initiated, stimulating the growth of new collagen, which lifts and tightens the skin over time.

Because ultrasound technology actually works non-invasively from the inside-out, results build gradually over two-three months, and can continue to improve up to six months after the procedure, Sarkar said.

The procedure has been cleared by the US FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) after safety demonstrations in clinical studies. Over 100,000 treatments have been performed safely worldwide.

Sarkar said the machine used for the therapy works on imaging and treatment.

“One can see which level of skin is being treated and the machine has a hand-device through which the energy is delivered to the targeted skin layer. There is no incision or any injury to the skin and the results come to peak at the end of three months.

“The machine is also completely portable and requires less space and is easy to handle,” Sarkar said.

Inder Raj S. Makin, co-founder of Ulthera Inc, said ultherapy was the only non-surgical cosmetic procedure that uses focused ultrasound to stimulate the growth of new collagen deep within the skin.

“The production of new collagen occurs over time, so results can become more apparent over three to six months. The procedure takes only about an hour for most patients, and there is no downtime.”

Makin said ultherapy was the perfect medical treatment for those who didn’t wish to undergo surgery. Besides, apart from being less time- consuming it was also gave better results.

“Ultherapy is today used in more than 55 countries and some 40 scientific papers have been publishedon the procedure. More than twice that number of scientific lectures have also been delivered at various platforms,” he said.
