The Ogun State Government has joined the rest of the world to commemorate the 2015 world Malaria Day (WMD). Addressing pressmen in Abeokuta, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Olaokun Soyinka said that the World Malaria Day was a World Health Organisation (WHO) initiative designed to create awareness on the disease, re-evaluate scaling up measures towards its elimination and chart new course beyond set targets in most affected countries.

“For us as a State, every day is Malaria day – a day to keep up the fight against the disease 25th of April is however set aside to educate and enlighten the people about malaria and also spread information on its prevention.” “This annual event helps stakeholders to take stock of their commitments and achievements to the ‘Roll Back Malaria Programme’ and chart a course beyond the time frame stated by the Abuja targets,” he explained.

“It is noteworthy that Nigeria is moving towards elimination of malaria and this requires scaling up of all proven interventions which will necessitate more resources to be allocated to the Malaria programme,” he said.

The Commissioner further stated that Ogun State has intensified efforts towards malaria elimination in the last four years, highlighting distribution of free Long Lasting Insecticide Nets (LLINs), distribution of Sulphadoxize Pyrimethamize (SP) drugs for prevention of malaria among pregnant women and free testing and distribution of free antimalarial drugs to all primary health facilities in the State as some of the notable achievements. He appreciated development partners and donor agencies for their continual support of the State malaria programme and called for more cooperation of the entire citizenry in the fight against malaria.
