Ogun rejects genital mutilation

The Ogun State government on Tuesday warned those who still engage in the traditional practice of performing female genital cutting and other forms of domestic abuse against women in the state to desist or face the wrath of the law. Perpetrators of the illegality now risk one-year jail term without any option of fine if found guilty.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Elizabeth Sonubi, gave this warning while addressing journalists as part of activities commemorating this year’s 16-Day activism campaign on the elimination of gender-based violence, particularly against the girl-child and the entire womenfolk. She described FGM, also called female circumcision, as a harmful traditional practices whereby the female genitals are partly or entirely removed, based on the belief that it curbs women’s   sexual urge.
