1. Only 4% Nigerians are registered for NHIS—Says President Healthcare provider.

At the Association’s National Mid-year capacity building meeting themed ‘’Health Insurance Nigeria; The Journey so far and the way forward’’ The President of the Healthcare providers Association of Nigeria (HCPAN), Dr.Umar Oluwole Sanda, said that only about 4 per cent of the population in Nigeria have so far registered for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) since it was launched in 2005 by the former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Dr. Sanda said, when the scheme was launched, it was promised that it would be reviewed after two years to cover most Nigerians, ‘now about 11years, we know the scheme has made progress but there more problems than existing solution’’, and the problems of low registration due to poor awareness of the benefits of the scheme. The Maintenance Organization (HMOs) has their grievance against NHIS and vice-versa.The providers are complaining of non-payment, delayed payment and under payment by HMOs, there are intra- providers professional complaining about the providers of the scheme according to guidelines.
