According to the World Health Organisation, over 37 million people are blind worldwide; also about 245 million are visually impaired. These disclosures were made by the Lagos State Chapter of the National Optometric Association as part of the celebration of the World Sight Day; today, Thursday the 8th day of October 2015.
According the association, about 90 percent of visually impaired people live in developing countries and also most the causes are preventable. The leading causes of blindness include refractive errors which can be corrected, glaucoma which can be managed, cataract which can be removed and some chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.
The theme of this year’s World Sight Day is Eye Care for All.
