Several studies in Ireland and other countries have shown that countries where there is a total ban on public smoking are healthier than countries that have no ban. The studies involved the prevalence of conditions such as stroke, heart disease, respiratory problems, infant health problems and death; all the figures went down after the ban on public smoking. Apart from improvement on community health, less money was required for health, thus freeing money for other pressing needs.

One in about 10 deaths globally is directly or indirectly linked to smoking, smokers die about ten years earlier than non-smokers. No benefit has been ascribed to smoking.
