A recent study in Sweden has shown that periodontitis is a risk factor for heart disease. The study found that the germs that causes periodontitis changes the expression of the gene that boosts the inflammation and atherosclerosis in coronary and aortic arteries.
Periodontitis is a disease of the tooth gum, the surrounding tissue and the bone the tooth sits on; the infection leads to tooth loss and heart disease.
