A Consultant Psychiatrist, Charlotte Nwigwe, has urged youths to shun drug abuse because of its negative consequences. She made the appeal during the health care week celebration of the St. Dominic Catholic Church, Yaba, Lagos. Nwigwe, who gave a talk on drug abuse, noted that it was a growing problem in the country. She said, “Hard drugs are conceived as powerful chemicals that alter the perception of people. It ruins lives and destroys future generations.
“The physical effects of drug abuse weaken the immune system. They cause victims to vomit, have abdominal pain, stroke, liver damage, heart problems and brain damage.” She identified cannabis (marijuana), cocaine, and heroin as some of the harmful drugs. The Chairman, Health Care Ministry, Dr. Uche Okoli, noted that no fewer than 130 persons attended the workshop. The participants received free medication and consultation from some of the resource persons.
