Lack of government support for irrigation farming in Plateau State has been decried by farmers.
The farmers specifically decried lack of support to them in the area of distribution of farming inputs, saying that was the major setback they faced in their effort to boost their production.
The Secretary of All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) in Jos North local government, Fodio Umar, said they did not receive any form of support from the state ministry of agriculture to boost irrigation farming in the state.
“I am just hearing it from you that government is supporting irrigation farmers. Farmers have since commenced irrigation farming in the state. We bought the seeds, fertiliser and all the necessary farming inputs with our money. We don’t rely on government as we don’t expect that kind of support.
“We are not losing hope of any assistance from the state government but we cannot wait for them because you will hear it in the media that government has made arrangement to support farmers with inputs but in reality it’s something else, you hardly see anything. The only form of support I can recall was last year during the raining season when the chairman of Jos North local government bought one trailer of fertiliser and sold to farmers at subsidised rate. But I am not aware of any support given to irrigation farmers here.”
Another irrigation farmer, Gyang Chollom, told this reporter in Foron village of Barkin Ladi local government that the state government was not supporting irrigation farmers in any way.
He said government has asked farmers to form cooperative societies as a pre-condition for getting support, adding: “Since we formed the groups, we have been holding meetings but I have not received any government support for irrigation till date. The only government support I received is the subsidised fertiliser and seeds that came through the GES arrangement during the raining season.” .
