The dreaded disease, Polio, has resurfaced in Syria after about 14 years of absence. Polio virus is transmitted through faecal contamination of hands, food, or/and water and is common where proper disposal of sewage is compromised.
Syria has been at war with itself for about two years leading to mass movement of people to refugee camps where there are usually water and sanitation problems-fertile grounds for the spread of polio. Besides, some areas have been cut off from vaccination due to the war.
Some of the refugees are now in Europe and there is genuine fear of the resurgence of the disease in Europe. A professor at the university of Tuebingin in Germany, Martin Eichner ,has in a letter to The Lancet, a British Medical Journal, pointed out that the disease could be brought to Europe by Syrian refugees.
