Gonorrhea is one of the commonest sexually transmitted diseases affecting both men and women in the 15 to 24 years age bracket.
It is the result, in most cases, of sexual indiscipline; it responds easily to treatment but if untreated can cause a lot of complications. Some of the possible complications are discussed below:

1.Chronic pain in the lower abdomen.
Gonorrhea if untreated can cause persistent pain in the lower abdomen, this is due to the spread of the infection to the womb, tubes and areas around the womb. Because so many infections can cause pain in this area, the diagnosis may not be easy unless there is a history of vaginal discharge. The pain could be severe and very discomforting.

2.Blocked tubes in women leading to infertility.
Untreated gonorrhea in women can lead to blockage of the tubes which bring eggs/fertilized eggs to the womb. If both tubes are blocked the woman will not be able to have children except through assistance.

3.Difficulty in passing urine in men
Untreated gonorrhea infection lead to narrowing of the tube through men pass urine. This could be very painful, the process of widening it temporarily is also very painful. It is much better not to ever have to go through it.

4.Inability of men to have children
Untreated gonorrhea, by destroying the cells in the testes, can prevent a man from having children.

5.Eye infection in babies
If a pregnant woman with untreated gonorrhea gives birth through the vagina, the child’s eyes may be infected by gonorrhea. This could be serious.

6.Ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside the womb).
With the blockage of the tubes in women, pregnancy can occur outside the womb. This is a well-known life threatening condition. A pregnancy outside the womb can rupture any time and that could be fatal.
