Manufacturers of bacon and sausages have claimed that they lost about 3 million pounds in sales within two weeks of the World Health Organization confirmation that processed meat was associated with cancer
About two weeks ago, the World health Organization confirmed that processed meat caused cancer of the large intestines (colon and rectum); the announcement was made in Geneva, Switzerland.
According to the report on which the announcement is based, eating about 50 grams of processed meat daily increases the risk of cancer by 18 percent. Processed meat includes sausage, salami, ham and bacon; they can be made from beef, pork and/or poultry.
The announcement also says red meat could be carcinogenic though remains nutritious.
The World Health Organization says about 34,000 deaths a year globally can be traced to consumption of processed meat.
