At least 3,200 patients are expected to benefit from a five-week surgical outreach programme that will be conducted by the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK) in partnership with the ministry of Health. Dr Theobald Hategekimana, the CHUK director general, said the programme aims at reaching out to patients across the country.
The programme will be conducted in two phases. The first phase will involve screening of patients while the second phase will involve carrying out outreach surgical interventions.
The exercise will be carried out in 29 district hospitals and an estimated 70 patients will be operated on weekly. Olivie Ndimukaga, 33, a resident of Kabuga, said the programme will help relieve him of the pain he has endured for the last two years. “I got an accident two years ago but all the numerous appointments I have been given have fallen flat. This time, since I am selected, I am just waiting to be operated,” he said.
