The West Africa Health Organisation (WAHO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MoH&SW) on Tuesday concluded a two-day orientation workshop on methodological tools for documenting Health Good Practices (HGP) process at a local hotel in Kololi.

The two-day workshop brought together senior officials from the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, regional health experts, researchers from different institutions, major local regional and international NGOs, managers of private companies involved in the health sector activities.

Declaring the two-day workshop open on behalf of the minister of Health and Social Welfare, deputy permanent secretary technical at the same ministry, who also doubles as WAHO liaison officer for The Gambia, Dawda Ceesay, said the resolution establishing the ECOWAS Forum on Health Best Practices (FHBP) was adopted at the 15th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Assembly of Health Ministers held from 11th-12th April 2014 in Monrovia, Liberia.

Ceesay thanked the director general of West African Health Organisation (WAHO) Dr. Xavier Crespin and his team – USAID and KfW – for selecting The Gambia to be part of the countries to do the training, which he said. “The other selected countries are Cote D’lvoire, The Gambia, Mali, Nigeria, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, and Niger. [They are] to organise a synchronised national workshop each on dissemination of methodological tools for Health Good Practices documentation”.

This national dissemination workshop DPS Ceesay went on, would accord participants the opportunity to document several key practices identified by cluster groups and finalise during the upcoming 1st ECOWAS Good Practices Forum in Health (FBPS) to be held from 29th -31st July 2015.

According to him, at the end of the workshop the participants would examine ways to accelerate the implementation of the great ideas contained in the draft document as a means of strengthening family planning, maternal and newborn health, youth and adolescent sexual and reproductive health, national response with the sole aim of meeting MDGs 4 and 5 targets and the post 2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He urged the participants to embrace the WAHO intervention in the systematic documentation, sharing of information and implementation of Good Health Practices for improved quality of life of the population and accelerated socio-economic development of people in the ECOWAS sub-region. The overall objective of the workshop, Ceesay added, is to strengthen the capacities of national stakeholders in documenting and sharing of best practices in health programmes and understand the overall process of ECOWAS forum best practices.
