The government has been advised to adopt Geographic Information System (GIS) in data collection from health facilities and dispensaries across the country to establish a reliable database of clients served and get understanding of their needs for timely disbursement of funds.

“The system will help healthcare workers across the country to investigate and assess information that might have been forgotten and give feedback on some improvement,” said Misungwi District Reproductive and Child Health Coordinator, Ms Mary Magengeli.

She was speaking at the commemoration of World Nurses Day at Misungwi District hospital grounds. She said if adopted, the system will help to remind health workers on what should be done especially to pregnant women in case they show any sign of danger when attending health facilities to reduce maternal deaths.

The GIS system is a computer application used by an expatriate or health worker to store, view and analyse geographical and statistical information and it’s designed to capture, manipulate and present all types of geographical data to the institution or hospitals. It helps health workers to keep records of patients and have close contacts with them during the execution of their duties at their work stations and is coordinated by Bugando Referral Hospital in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and University of Colorado, Denver.

She said they adopted the system in the district as a pilot study and it has recorded great success, and it is implemented in seven wards in the district and until last week a total of 2,422 patients have been registered through the system.

“Out of those, 1882 women were screened for HIV/Aids prevalence and let me take this opportunity to advice the government to adopt it as it will serve time and resources to health workers to be used wisely instead of dealing with petty issues,” she said.
