The Minister for Health, Community Development, Gender, Elders and Children, Ms Ummy Mwalimu, has directed the Pharmacy Council of Tanzania to conduct countrywide certificate verification in a bid to control and ensuring that only professional pharmacists take up jobs. Ms Mwalimu also directed the council to take disciplinary and legal measures including revoking the licences of pharmacists who act contrary to the ethics and requirements of the council. There is a general fear that quack pharmacists deal in medical drugs. “Some of these pharmacists have been involved in the disappearance of medical drugs and supplies being property of the government,” Ms Mwalimu said. She issued the directives recently in Dar es Salaam during her first meeting with members of the Pharmacy Council of Tanzania Board. Among other things, she warned on the current trend of changing the medical drugs business to be like any other ordinary business such as that of selling clothes, a situation that is not acceptable. “The work of selling human medical drugs should not be compared to that of selling clothes and shoes. People should learn to respect the business by complying with all necessary regulations and procedures,” she noted. The council should be keen on dealing with those engaging in the business without the necessary requirements and qualifications. She urged them to look on the issues of conflict of interest especially in circumstances where district pharmacists are involved in scandals of owning more than one drug store in their working areas. “We are going to work carefully on these matters.
