One of the causes of diabetes is pregnancy; called gestational diabetes, it usually disappears after delivery. However in a few cases it persists or the woman develops full diabetes several years after the pregnancy.
Now, scientists working in Helmholtz Zentrum Munchen, Germany have devised a test to predict the risk of a woman who had gestational diabetes developing full blown diabetes within five years after the pregnancy.
The test takes into consideration; the body mass index (BMI), Genetic predisposition, whether the woman breast fed the baby or not, and whether the gestational diabetes was treated with insulin or not.
Based on the above, the team is able to attach percentage to the risk.
