Today, the 24th of October is World Polio Day, a day set side by Rotary International about a decade ago to create awareness on Polio. It is the birthday of Jonas Salk who pioneered the polio vaccine. Oral polio vaccine developed by Albert Sabin is now most in use world wide.

Poliomyelitis (aka Polio) is a crippling and occasional fatal infectious disease which is still world wide though reduced by about 99 percent through the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
The disease has no cure but is vaccine preventable and the Eradication Initiative is expected to continue until the world is polio free.
This year’s theme is One day, One Focus: Ending Polio
