A study just concluded at the University of Michigan has informed the World Health Organisation to recommend daily prescription regime for the treatment of tuberculosis to avoid the growth of resistant strains.

In the study, the team had a computer model of TB and treated it with different prescription regimes and came to the conclusion that once or twice a week prescription were more likely to lead to resistance than daily prescription.

In daily prescription regime, the drug is dispensed daily to the TB patient by a healthcare professional or by somebody so designated in the community; this ensures that the patient takes his drugs every day and as at when due.

There has been a big growth in resistant cases of TB in recent years with about 500,000 persons globally developing the condition in 2014 alone.
