U.S Releases Malaria Report on Nigeria to Improve Prevention

The United States (U.S) President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) led by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has of yesterday released its 12th annual report documenting the programs in Nigeria and other countries. As of 2017, the U.S. through the PMI, implemented with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) worked with partners to reach over 480 million people at risk of malaria across sub- Saharan Africa and targeted communities threatened by malaria. From 2009-2015, the government of Nigeria with support from partners distributes approximately 98 million mosquito nets. Also progress has been made to the extent that in 2010, 23% of the household population slept inside Insecticide Treated Mosquito Nets (ITN) while in year 2015, 375 did. PMI is working with Nigeria’s National Malaria Elimination Program to scale-up proven, cost effective and life saving malaria control interventions which are ITNs, intermittent preventive treatment for pregnant women, diagnostic testing and highly effective malaria treatment. Also the U.S. government through to PMI has promised to partner with Nigeria to end the malaria scourge.
