Uganda: 1,790 Dogs, Cats Vaccinated Against Rabies in Napak District
In a bid to fight rabies, Napak District in Karamoja sub-region in north eastern Uganda has vaccinated a total of 1,790 dogs and cats.

The one-week vaccination exercise was spearheaded by the district veterinary department. Dr Francis Inangolet, the district veterinary officer, said Karamoja sub-region always experiences outbreak of rabies during the dry season. “We are done with vaccination and I can guarantee that we shall be safe,” he said recently. Dr Inangolet said the door-to -door vaccination was completed last Sunday. He explained that rabies is a viral disease that cause inflammation of the brain in worm blooded animals. Dr Inangolet said the virus affects the central nervous system ultimately causing disease in the brain and death. He added that early symptoms of rabies in people are similar to that of many other illnesses, including fever, headache and general weakness or discomfort. He appealed to other districts in the sub-region to vaccinate dogs and cats to curb outbreak of the disease. Daily Monitor has learnt that a full dose of rabies medication for infected people is between Shs150,000 to 200,000, a cost that many people in Karamoja cannot afford.
