New research has shown that the part of the brain used for learning, memory and mental health is smaller in people with unhealthy diets.
The result of the study shows that older adults who eat more unhealthy foods, such as  sweet drinks, salty snacks and processed meats, have smaller part of the brain needed for learning, memory and mental health, while those who eat more nutrient rich foods such as vegetables, fruits and fish have larger part of the brain for learning.
This goes to show that if we eat unhealthy diets, it may influence the risk of dementia, cognitive decline and mental disorders such as depression and anxiety in older people.
However, since diet is important for brain health, good nutrition is key to all age groups.
The study was done by Australian scientists in Deakin University and Australian National University.
