The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said it has facilitated N70 Million loan to be used by 3,000 households to construct improved toilets in four states of the country making use of some Micro Finance Institutions (MFI’s) under the Fund’s Sanitation Marketing Program. This information was contained in a statement signed by Mr. Amir Hamza Syed UNICEF International Consultant on Sanitation Marketing. Syed stated that the program in collaboration with Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agencies (RUWASSA) will operate in the affected states which are Katsina, Jigawa, Bauchi and Benue and this program would assist the country to attain Open Defecation Free (ODF) status by 2015. Syed stated that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has already been signed between UNICEF and the MFI’s The consultant added that the program had however, been extended to Zamfara, noting that 18 local government areas in Nigeria were currently participating in the program. Syed revealed that the loan would be repaid within 10 months and in single installment.
