UNICEF, Government to provide Malnourished Children with Therapeutic Food

The Federal Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to procure Ready to Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) to malnourished children. This was made known through a press statement on Wednesday 16th May 2018 by the Federal Ministry of Health. The agreement is for counterpart contribution for the procurement and distribution of the commodity across the country. RUTF is a therapeutic feeding made up of energy dense, micro-nutrient enhances paste. The ingredients of RUTF include peanuts, oil, sugar, milk powder, vitamin and mineral supplements which provide the nutrients needed to recover from malnutrition. There is an estimate of about 2.5million Nigerian children under the age of five who have severe acute malnutrition. Also records from the ministry indicated that about 20% of these children would die if nothing is done about their cases.
