According to the members of the West African College of Physicians, the health care system in the sub-region is ill prepared for epidemics such as the Ebola and Cholera outbreak .

This was issued in a communiqué at the end of the 38/39th annual conference of the college in Abuja recently. The communiqué attributed this to poor funding and absence of political will.

The conference was attended by about 950 delegates from 12 West African countries including Nigeria and Ghana.

The health system comprises the infrastructure (clinics, general hospitals, tertiary hospitals, laboratories, and infectious diseases hospitals), trained personnel, administrative setup and the linkages.
