The visiting World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa has hailed Liberia for the success made in the fight against Ebola. Dr. Matshidiso Moeti said though the Ebola outbreak in West Africa is the largest in the history of the virus, the people of Liberia worked along with their government and partners to combat the disease.

She said WHO will learn from Liberia measures and strategies that were used to fight the virus for future reference whenever there is an outbreak. Dr. Moeti spokeWednesday when she met with authorities of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in Congo Town, outside Monrovia. She said Liberia has demonstrated to the world that it is capable of dealing with serious health crisis once the requisite support is given.

Dr. Moeti lauded the engagement with the communities which, she said, played a key role in the fight against Ebola. Moeti said WHO would continue to support Liberia beyond the Ebola crisis so as to improve the country’s health system; “we will stand with you ever step along the way in the rebuilding process of your health sector.” Dr. Moeti said WHO is confident that Liberia will be declared Ebola free come May 12, 2015. Earlier, outgoing Health Minister Dr. Walter Gweingale lauded WHO for the support given Liberia over the years especially during the Ebola crisis.
