WHO releases new guidelines for the treatment of drug-resistance STIs.
The World Health Organization has issued new guidelines for the treatment of three common sexually transmitted infections (STIs)- Chlamydia,

gonorrhea and syphilis all caused by bacteria and are generally curable with antibiotics. According to WHO, resistance of these STIs to antibiotics has increased rapidly in recent years and has reduced treatment options, it is estimated that each year, 131 million people are infected with Chlamydia, 78 million with gonorrhea, and 5.6 million with syphilis. The new guideline calls on health authorities to advise doctors to prescribe whichever antibiotic is most effective based on local resistance patterns. WHO discourages the prescription of quinolones (a class of antibiotic) for the treatment of gonorrhea due to widespread high levels of resistance. WHO has urged countries to update their national gonorrhea treatment guidelines in response to the growing threat of antibiotic resistance. National health authorities are urged to track the prevalence of resistance to different antibiotics among the population.
