A stampede which occurred this morning in Saudi Arabia during ‘Stoning the Devil’ ritual has claimed the lives of 717 persons and injured 805 others. It occurred in the Tent town of Mina, about 3 kilometres from Mecca.
‘Stoning the Devil’ is a ritual performed by all pilgrims on the third day of the Hajj.
This is the second calamity during this Hajj, over 100 people died when a construction crane collapsed on the grand mosque in Mecca about two weeks ago, four (4) Nigerians were among the dead.
About 4000 workers have been dispatched to the disaster site by the Saudi Government to help.
Over 2 million Muslims performed this year’s Hajj.
