A Washington State couple is preparing for the birth of their 2nd twin, months after the first was born in September; Nick and Holli Gorveat welcomed their first twin son on Sept. 29th, 2015 according to officials from Evergreen Health Medical Center.
The condition is called a “Twin to Twin” syndrome where one twin draws blood from the other twin in Utero.
Dr. Martin Walker, Director of Fetal Medicine of Evergreen Health Medical Centre, said that without treatment, the syndrome is fatal in 90 per cent of cases.
After the 1st twin was born, labour pain stopped and doctors found that it was possible to stop the patient from delivering her second son by manually closing her cervix.
The team hopes to have the 2nd twin delivered at full term.
The 2nd twin will be bigger than his brother, since the growth in-utero is much better than growth in the neonatal intensive care unit.
