Dr Paul Orhili, Director of NAFDAC, recognises that the urge to beautify the skin with cosmetic products did not start today. But the urge is higher and riskier now as many now go for products capable of altering their natural skin tone. He defined bleaching as cosmetic treatment to reduce the prominence of skin discolouration and even remove the colour of the skin.
Experts believe that anything applied to alter the original nature of the skin could be harmful to the body.
According to WHO, Nigeria has the world’s largest percentage of people who bleach.
