According to a new study from Duke University and the Environment working group, painting your nails doesn’t just give it a nice coat of colour, it may also release an endocrine disrupting chemical into the body.

The study found that women who painted their nails with nail product including triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) had a metabolite of the chemical in their bodies 10-14 hours later. Their level of diphenyl phosphate (TPHP) which forms when the body metabolizes TPHP, increase by sevenfold, according to a news release.

These chemicals according to the researchers cause endocrine disruption, reproductive and developmental problems and TPHP in particular may contribute to weight gain and obesity.
